Relay for Life is a very exciting fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. This is a fundraiser that has hundreds of events each year and raises millions of dollars for its amazing cause.

On April 26, MD had its own Relay for Life fundraiser, with over 200 participants! The event took place at the MD football field. It began at 2 pm and ended at 8 pm.

The fundraiser was really fun and it was obvious that the Relay for Life Committee had definitely put in a lot of effort to make this event possible. The committee was led by Aparna Gunturi, a grade twelve student who had been working towards this event for two years. The teacher correspondent in charge was Mrs. Richardson. They worked together with the Committee for many, many hours, resulting in the event being a huge success!

At Relay, there were refreshment tables that provided free water, fruits and vegetables, musical performances from MD’s amazing and talented students (acapella, Funk Band etc.), as well as many other activities to encourage participation from the attendees (dance contests, tug of war and much more).

To say the least, the fundraiser was very successful; MD doubled its fundraising goal! Instead of $10 000, the school raised $20 000! Both online and offline, participants from MD raised thousands of dollars that will help the fight against cancer!

The event included food trucks which provided root beer floats, beavertails, burgers and various other foods and drinks. A free pizza lunch was provided to all the participants who raised the minimum $35. Participants also received luminaries and Relay for Life T-shirts.

One of the most memorable moments from Relay was Mrs. Norwood’s cancer story, which was truly inspiring and an honour to hear. There were several other cancer survivors at the event, who led the first lap to start off the event.

The event also had a very special visitor, Mayor Krantz, who was present for the closing ceremony and the last lap around the track. Mayor Krantz expressed how proud he was of MD for surpassing its fundraising goal, and encouraged the school to continue participating in Relay for Life events in the future.

A special thank you to Mrs. Richardson and the MD Relay for Life Committee for planning and organizing this incredible event!
