The popular yet controversial young adult novel, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas has come to theatres with a 97% rating from Rotten Tomatoes. With topics of police brutality against black people in America and racism inflicted on children, The Hate U Give is an option for reading circles in grade 10 English classes. From a variety of grades, students enrolled in English, media studies, and studies in literature classes filled five buses to watch a private screening of this hot new film at the Burloak Cineplex today.

Students will be given assignments and discussions based on the film in their respective classes, and even extra marks if they chose to attend this viewing. Extra credit and popcorn aside, the students loved this film and had lively discussions about the injustice that the main character, Starr, faced throughout the story. Some of the students even said that it was one of the best movies they’ve ever seen! Definitely a recommend from the staff and students who were lucky enough to miss class for this unique learning experience.
