On Saturday mornings, most students are sleeping in, relaxing, or working—but not the Health and Wellness SHSM students! They woke up early Saturday morning to go on a trip to the Michener Institute of the Applied Health Sciences in Toronto. In the morning, the students got dropped off at MDHS, where they met up and waited for the school bus. The bus left at 8:30 a.m., taking the SHSM students to Downtown Toronto.
The open house started at 10:00 a.m, allowing the students free time to explore the many floors of the Michener Institute. Each floor had unique fields of study showcased, including radiation therapist, cardiovascular perfusionist, respiratory therapist, and medical lab technician. Students also viewed the different rooms and labs in the building. Some students even got the chance to try intubating a patient!
The Michener Institute staff and students provided lots of helpful information about the programs they offered to the SHSM students, giving them a good look at some of the lesser known healthcare careers.
For the first time ever, the entire Health and Wellness SHSM class of 2018-2019 met each other. This includes the students who currently attend a different high school, and will be coming to MD to take the SHSM during semester two.
Everyone had a wonderful time learning, and were brought together by their shared interest in the healthcare field!
