Eco-Friendly Tips for the Holidays

By Ben Hartshorn

With 2018 coming to a close, Winter Break is just around the corner! Keen to keep it green? Here are some tips and eco-friendly ideas to help save the Earth this holiday season.

Bring Along Reusable Bags!

Whether you’re grocery shopping, buying clothes or finding the perfect gift for that special someone, you’ve probably noticed how many plastic bags are used and thrown away each day. Many are bringing reusable grocery bags to the store, but why not bring along your own reusable produce bags for your apples and peppers? Have you ever noticed the handfuls of bags being carried about during the holiday season in shopping malls? Bring along your reusable bags to the shopping malls to store your purchased gifts! Grocery bags to hold your produce and plastic gift bags from that shoe store down the street all contribute to the waste currently filling up our landfills. The solution? Larger, stronger, reusable bags can help keep garbage bins empty—and the environment happy!

Reduce The Use of Wrapping Paper!

Believe it or not, most wrapping paper isn’t recyclable—meaning each present you wrap increases your waste production! It’s important to reduce the use of wrapping paper when preparing gifts by using recyclable material, reusable gift bags, or by making your own recyclable wrapping paper!

Enjoy Organic Food During Your Holiday Feast!

Not only is eating locally-grown food at your holiday dinner supporting local hard-working farmers, but it also tastes delicious and helps the environment! Buying fresh, locally-grown food is a sustainable action and plays a huge part in your community. After all, who knows what sort of additives or Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s) may be hiding in that ‘ripe’ orange pepper you bought at the grocery store yesterday?

Buy Eco-Friendly Gifts With Limited Packaging!

Don’t you just hate gifts encased in layers upon layers of cardboard and styrofoam? Yeah, Mother Nature does too. Buying gifts with limited packaging and avoiding non-recyclable plastic packaging is a healthy way to keep it green on Christmas Day. You could even try making your own gifts with reusable materials!

Donate Time and Money to Environmental Causes!

What better a time to donate to a local charity organization that during the season of giving? Giving back to the community and volunteering time is a fantastic way to spread holiday cheer and make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. Keep it green this holiday by donating time and/or money to an environmental cause or charity this winter!

Make an Eco-Friendly New Year’s Resolution!

It’s important to think environmentally friendly during the holidays, but why stop there? Make a plan/goal for the new year and think about how you can go green in 2019.

From reducing the use of wrapping paper to giving back to your community, there are so many ways to keep it green this season. Be mindful as to how you can reduce, reuse, recycle, and keep the planet we live on a happy and healthy place to be!

Happy holidays from the Eco Club!
